What is LDAC?


As mentioned above, LDAC is a wireless audio codec developed by Sony. This audio codec is different from the old Bluetooth streaming technology. This codec uses a combination of lossless (if possible) and lossy compression to deliver audio in high resolution.

How does it work?

Bitrate is a term used to describe the amount of data transferred to audio. Generally, the higher the bit rate, the better the audio quality. If you want to download or listen to music in physical audio format, you can buy a higher bitrate. On the other hand, if you are streaming music, you need to lower the bitrate for effective streaming.


LDAC uses a different bit rate than older wireless audio technologies. This codec uses bit rates of 330/660 / 990kbps at sample rates of 96 and 48kHz or 303/606 / 909kbps at sample rates of 88.2 and 44.1kHz. These bitrates are higher than those found in older wireless audio technologies. For example, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group’s SBC uses a bitrate of 345kbps at 48kHz, while Qualcomm’s aptX uses a bitrate of 384kbps at 48kHz.

How does it affect the quality of wireless audio?

Sony is promoting this technology as a truly wireless, high-resolution audio solution. In practice, only higher bitrates of 990kbps qualify codec claims. SoundGuys conducted detailed scrutiny of the technology and concluded that LDAC was not very successful when it came to 24-bit / 96kHz studio-quality recording.

Other available high-resolution audio solutions

Other companies are also trying to make high-resolution audio available in the world of wireless earphones. In 2016, Qualcomm introduced aptX HD (also known as aptX Lossless) to provide higher bitrate streaming at 576kbps with Bluetooth headphones compatible with this technology.

Can LDAC be used with other brands?

Sony has developed this technology and continues to integrate LDAC into its products. However, LDAC encoders are open source, allowing manufacturers to incorporate technology into non-Sony products.


This gives all OEMs the freedom to integrate this standard into their own Android devices. If you are using an Android device running Oreo or later, you can use LDAC with compatible wireless audio products.

This includes wireless earphones and headphones. Other brands, such as Anker Life, also have LDAC support on some headphones, and users can also use this technology to listen to music on some gaming headsets.


Users can also use LDAC with some wireless speakers, home theater setups, soundbars, dedicated Walkman series portable audio players, Bluetooth headphone amplifiers, and even car receivers.

Currently, none of Apple’s products support LDAC, and users cannot use higher bitrates that the codec supports on iPhone, iPad, or AirPods.
